The Oakwood Garden Club is a member of the SPHO but operates as a separate organization. Oakwood Garden Club events and fundraisers benefit the Oakwood Garden Club and its mission. The SPHO receives no regular funding from the Oakwood Garden Club and vice versa. The information below is provided as a courtesy.


Oakwood Garden Club

The Oakwood Garden Club was formed in 1950 and has the distinguished honor of being one of Raleigh’s oldest garden clubs. The founder, Vallie Henderson, was an avid gardener who was passionate about beautifying her surroundings. The park located at the corner of Oakwood Avenue and Linden Street is named in her honor.

Membership
Extended to any resident of the Oakwood neighborhood. Annual dues are $20.

Activities

  • Monthly meetings at members’ homes on the first Thursday of each month that include guest lecturers. All neighbors are invited to attend.

  • Maintenance of Vallie Henderson Park and neighborhood sign gardens

  • Yard of the Month and annual Holiday Decorating awards

  • Service days to provide neighborhood beautification

  • Bouquets for Good Neighbor Committee

  • Annual Garden Tour and Tea; proceeds fuel our grant program. Click here for more information.  

  • Annual arts and crafts event for members

  • Grant program providing funds to nonprofit/other organizations that have proximity to the Oakwood neighborhood and have a gardening component and/or enhance public health and well-being. Click here for grant guidelines and application.
